The XII FUEGORED International Conference

The XII FUEGORED International Conference will be held in Asturias from October 20 to 23, taking place at the Mieres Campus of the University of Oviedo and at the CSIC delegation in Asturias (Oviedo), organized by the Biodiversity Research Institute (IMIB, CSIC-Universidad de Oviedo-Principado de Asturias). The event is expected to attract researchers from across Europe.

The program will include scientific sessions, field excursions, and thematic workshops covering a wide range of topics around wildland fires. We warmly welcome the participation of researchers and stakeholders working on any fire-related topics, including all its environmental, social, and political dimensions.

In addition, the congress will feature a public event dedicated to wildland fires in Atlantic Spain. This space aims to showcase the research being conducted in Asturias, Galicia, and Cantabria and foster the involvement of stakeholders engaged in fire management, prevention, response, and scientific study in Atlantic environments.

FUEGORED is an international thematic network dedicated to the study of wildland fires, especially their ecological and socio-economical impacts, and is currently one of the most active scientific platforms in the field of fire. The network was created in 2007 as an initiative to strengthen communication and cooperation among Spanish researchers studying the impact of fire on soil. Over time, FUEGORED has grown steadily, now surpassing 600 members. This reflects both the growing importance of the topic and the network’s ability to create a space for scientists, technicians, managers, and international researchers from countries such as the United States, Portugal, Colombia, Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Lithuania, Italy, Mexico, and Brazil. Its main objectives include:

Promoting scientific outreach, providing technicians and managers with useful information to improve wildland fire management.
Reviewing and updating scientific knowledge on the ecosystem effects of fire, as well as available tools and technologies for their assessment, in order to ensure rigorous and up‑to‑date understanding that supports better management, prevention, and restoration strategies in areas affected by wildland fires.
Encouraging interdisciplinary cooperation and supporting research carried out by early‑career scientists, fostering their active participation in the network, their access to training, collaboration, and dissemination opportunities, and strengthening their integration into the scientific community.

The network’s main public activity is the FUEGORED International Congresses, held systematically every two years.
